Undergraduate WIL Courses

Medicine Clerkship Program

The Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine is a renowned integrated, outcome-based medical program that incorporates WIL courses from the second year of the program.

The Medicine Clerkship Program is an elective placement program that provides successful applicants the opportunity to gain practical experience in selected disciplines at one of UNSW's clinical teaching hospitals. More information can be found on the Medicine Clerkship Program website.

Health Professional Programs

WIL is an essential component of UNSW’s Health Professional Programs, with WIL opportunities integrated in the following programs:

International Public Health

The School of Population Health offers an exciting WIL opportunity to our undergraduate students through the Public Health Capstone (PHCM3003). This course provides students in the Bachelor of International Public Health program an opportunity to consolidate and integrate their knowledge and skills of public health research and practice, and to apply these to a particular public health issue. The Public Health Capstone course allows students to undertake a supervised placement with a relevant organisation or project, either locally, inter-state or overseas.

Postgraduate WIL Courses

Population Health

The School of Population Health offers a highly rewarding WIL course, PHCM9143 Internship, available to students enrolled in the Master of Public Health, Master of International Public Health, Master of Infectious Diseases Intelligence, and Master of Health Management degree programs (or dual degrees). This WIL course provides students with the opportunity to gain real-world experience by doing an internship in a relevant health service or public health organisation in Australia or overseas.

Interns will have an opportunity to make valuable contributions to organisational healthcare initiatives that may involve areas such as policy, planning, and evaluation associated with the delivery of healthcare services, or the preparation, appraisal, implementation or evaluation of health related projects.

For more detail on the PHCM internship course see here.

School of Biomedical Sciences

The Master of Science in Health Data Science is Australia’s first postgraduate qualification in Health Data Science. Within this program, students have the option to complete a research dissertation project (combination of HDAT9900/HDAT9901/HDAT9902 for a total of 24 units of credit) that can be conducted with an industry WIL partner. Students can also elect to complete a project within their own relevant workplace. The research project allows students an opportunity to apply skills to a relevant health data problem within a real-world environment.

"I was initially drawn to the internship program by the high calibre placements on offer. I was placed with the Emergency and Humanitarian Action Unit, South East Asia Regional Office, World Health Organization, New Delhi, India. I also wanted to fully realise the Master of Public Health stream I had enrolled in (International Health) with some practical developing world experience. The internship program was a perfect way to blend my global health aspirations with practical and academic work – the internship counted as six units of credit towards my MPH."

- Aditya Vyas (Master of Public Health)
